MICA Grad Show 2014    |    View on Behance

This year-long project pulled together content from the Maryland Institute College of Art’s sixteen graduate programs to promote and record graduating student work. They developed an identity system that looks great on its own but can also showcase bright artwork, then designed and developed a responsive website, mailers, poster, and forthcoming print catalog.

Derrick Castle    |    http://strawcastle.com    |    Etsy Shop

"Living in Nashville, I have been exposed to mixology and more modern interpretations of classic cocktails through friends that I have in the bartending industry. I wanted to pay tribute to some of my favorite classic cocktails with this series of block prints."

Straw Castle started out as small independent clothing line, which lead into something Derrick could have never imagined. A year or so into his clothing line release, he started getting emails from a wide range of clothing lines and merch groups that had seen his designs and loved what he was doing. It’s just unfortunate that this did not result in the way of sales for his clothing line. What it did do, is give him the opportunity to work with these kind folks creating designs for their perspective projects.

Oscar Wilde photographed by Napoleon Sarony, 1882.

These photographs were taken in January of 1882, when Wilde had first arrived in America for his year long lecture tour. All were taken in the studio of the most famous portrait photographer of the time, Canadian born Napoleon Sarony. The various furs, capes, velvet jackets, and stockings Wilde wore for the photo shoot reflected the attire he would wear to his lectures.

It certainly surprised me when I found out that the majority of Wilde’s most iconic images came from the same session, and were taken in the U.S. when Wilde had only published a yet to be produced play, Vera; or, the Nihilists, and a single book of verse (which Wilde can be seen holding in the first and second photographs).
